Was just wondering if anyone has ever installed Awstats on Dreamhost.
I got used to Awstats with another host and can't get used to the dreamhost stats. I found a tutorial of a so called simple install of awstats for Dreamhost.
Here is the link to the message board where someone posted the instructions. was just wondering if someone who has attempted this can let me know if its a legit install. I checked out the wiki on the install and got a lil discouraged. |

Yep, it's doable, but can be quite tricky. I never followed the DH wiki on this one, I did it following the awstats readmes, step by step.
It you're going to try it, take it slow and follow and double check each step.
I don't remember the wiki method, but the awstats readme one really requires you to use shell access. It's possible without, but it's even more tricky!
EDIT: Looked at the wiki, seems it should work. I'd not bother with the cron job tho. You can make a simple mod to the config ( I think it is ) so you get a "update now" button on the stats page, and just click that whenever you want |

I dunno.
The tar file will contain all the stuff in tar format. To use that you need to either upload it to the server, and go in thru telnet and untar it.
You can look up how tar works by googling it, and it will tell you how to untar a file. There may be a "tar" for windows, I think some of the pkzip versions may handle tar. Tar, is a bit like a compressed file or a zip file, except it's not compressed, just all the folders go into one big file ( if that makes sense ).
The exe file I'd think is for those wanting to install awstats for windows. You'll be needing the Unix version. Untarring it on the server is the easiest I'd say.
The awstats homepage has some good info. |

To frustrating, i'll just deal with having to use short stats for my blogs and DH stats for tgp's.
Thanks for trying OffMan |

I was the same - ran on GoDaddy - they offer it free with every domain - kinda liked it, but moved over to Dreamhost and lost it. But really in the end, im really finding that i'm not really interested in checking stats in depth daily like I used to when I started up - its just... stats. However another alternative is to get a Google Analytics account, and run with that. Now it gives you up to ten domains in an account.
